Cruel Commercial Ties Together Kids, Cancer, and Bologna

Look, we all know that hot dogs and bologna and the like are bad for you. Kids eat it and then get cancer later in life. We get that. Is it really necessary, though, to make PSAs like this one (from the Cancer Project) this horrific? It's not like anybody who sees it can take it upon themselves to change the school lunch program. Sometimes we don't know which is worse: the problems or the exploitative efforts of advertising agencies to eradicate them.

Roving Chef: Michael Psilakis Buys Greek in Astoria

Michael Psilakis is the most famous Greek chef in America, but you won't find a lot in common, at least superficially, between the high-concept food he serves at Anthos and what you're likely to get in your average Astoria seafood joint. That doesn't mean that the chef, who has deep roots in the Greek community, doesn't go to Astoria to get Greek food. On a recent afternoon, we went with him. Watch the video for a pastry primer and to learn the difference between green and black olives.

Steve Guttenberg: ‘I’ve Made My Real House Into My Steak House!’

When he’s not loving the ladies and tangling with photographers, Steve Guttenberg is a restaurateur! In this Funny or Die video he just posted, the Goot advertises Guttenberg’s Steak House, home of Police Academy Au-Gratin, Cocoon Brûlée, and “delectable Short Circuit Ribs.” Okay, so it’s not quite as hilarious as the goth-metal ad for Wilkinson’s Family Restaurant (“We feast on meats! The witch’s teats!”), but it sure makes us wish he really did wait tables. Hey, if it could happen to the Dell Dude...

Tacos and a Contest at the New York by ‘New York’ Highbrow Barbecue

The New York by New York Highbrow Barbecue this past Sunday brought out a big crowd, and, in C.J. Jacobson, the biggest alumni ever of Top Chef, at least physically. C.J. created a pulled-pork taco, a watermelon salad, and some grilled corn to feed the crowd, and then helped to judge a grilling contest with a $1,000 prize. If you couldn’t make it, just check out the video. It’s the next-best thing to being there.

Inside Soho’s Artisanal-Ice-Cream Truck

This summer, 24-year-old Ben Van Leeuwen started making his own organic ice cream and selling it out of a refurbished postal truck in Soho. Leeuwen has since parked another truck on the Upper West Side, with plans for a third in Brooklyn. His high-end flavors, like giandujia with Michel Cluizel chocolate and Piedmont hazelnuts, will be sold in Whole Foods and Murray’s Cheese come September. Watch the video to see exactly how to make an artisanal sundae. —Alexandra Vallis

‘Bottle Shock’ Stomps French Wine All Over Again

In France in 1976, California wines were found superior to the best French vintages in a historic blind tasting known as the Judgment of Paris. Bottle Shock, a movie loosely based on those events, opens today, starring Alan Rickman as snotty Englishman Steven Spurrier (the real-life Parisian wine merchant who orchestrated the tasting event as a publicity stunt) and Bill Pullman as the wary, rough-edged vintner from Château Montelena. There are Napa panoramas, PG-13 romps between a nubile trio of young winery workers, and an inside look at the mavericks who made California wine worth drinking. Watch the trailer and then sneak a bottle of NoCal's finest into the theater. —Alexandra Vallis

The World’s Biggest Restaurant Isn’t in the Meatpacking District

Big-box restaurants like Buddakan or Morimoto may be overwhelming, but they’re twee bistros compared to the West Lake Restaurant in China's Hunan province. Watch The Biggest Chinese Restaurant in the World, a Sundance series premiering next month that “explores contemporary Chinese society through the prism of the Hunan province’s five-star dining complex.” (Who is awarding these stars? The Chinese government?) Watch the video to see what a night in a restaurant that serves 5,000 people is like. By the end, you'll be singing along in praise of conformity with all the other employees.

Mario Batali Makes His Music-Video Debut

We have no idea why Mario Batali and his son, Benno, appear in “Purpose Was Again,” the new video from the Bloodsugars, but here it is. In the opening scene, Mario neglects his kid, seemingly in order to talk shop with a manager, but ultimately gives him a big bear hug and hops on a commuter bus. Come on — a tandem Vespa would’ve been cooler.

Video: A Summer Fish Grill With Eric Ripert

With the possible exception of the god Neptune, no one has authority over the fishes of the sea like Eric Ripert, the chef at Le Bernardin. Taking over the big grill last week at Harry's at Water Taxi Beach, the Ripper showed us how to cook black bass on a piece of slate. It was a new method to us, but after tasting the results, we'll never grill fish another way again.

Bourdain Set to Reconquer the World in New Season of ‘No Reservations’

The new season of Tony Bourdain's No Reservations series starts tonight on The Travel Channel, and we've got a preview. The clip above is a season overview, with episodes ranging from Tokyo ("raw fish, cold steel") to Spain ("hardcore food porn"). But it's the shows in beerless, hot Saudi Arabia and (in tonight's premiere) wartorn Laos that will be the most revealing — if not for the food then for the culture, which Bourdain, alone of food media TV stars, actually tries to get into in some depth.
