Gallerist Ruth Kalb—hauled off on Memorial Day weekend for serving alcohol without a license at an opening of Steven Klein photos—isn’t the only one feeling East End law-enforcement zealousness this year. Traffic cops have new license-plate-scanner systems that read plate numbers and search a database for any violations, reports Dan’s Papers editor Dan Rattiner, who was confronted by East Hampton police on his way out of Citarella over a year-old snafu with his car insurance. “They threatened to arrest me,” he says. “They impounded my Tahoe.” Why the enthusiastic enforcement? Rattiner says Quogue officials told him they’re “responding to a new advisory from the state that police should be more aggressive in all areas to combat terrorism” when he looked into another case of robust cop work. The Quogue P.D. denies receiving any such advisory.
