You won’t find matchy-matchy Garanimals or starched Tartine et Chocolat at Space Kiddets. What you will find is a broad selection of trendy lines (Juicy, Paul Frank), hip classics (Petit Bateau), and up-and-coming designers. One of the coolest new lines is BooFooWoo, a Japanese house specializing in surprising prints, such as a bright-yellow romper with an appliqué ant farm, or bell-bottoms swimming in carp. The main floor stocks clothes for younger kids (birth to girls’ size 6; boys up to size 12). The upstairs is for preteens. Prices run the gamut from $5 for a pair of cotton socks to $180 for a Betsey Johnson organza party dress. “There’s an audience of people who like to mix and match things themselves,” says owner Cynthia Radoczy. “We’re not a store that has sets.”

Competition breeds the best. If only one pizzeria existed in New York, of course, there’d be no real winning slice. Thankfully, we’ll never know what that sorry situation tastes like, since pizza—like dance parties, dog runs, and fried chicken—has to evolve upward here.
