Jana Starr Antiques and Bridal

Starr’s collection of vintage lace gowns features instant heirlooms, evoking the Victorian and Edwardian eras with yards upon yards of 100-year-old handmade Belgian appliqués or embroidered English net. Prices range from $2,000 to $3,500.

Jane Wilson-Marquis

Wilson-Marquis’s boutique carries a variety of styles, and specializes mostly in streamlined, elegant custom-made gowns ($3,000 to $6,000). For creative brides, the Simply Jane line lets them choose from a series of five basic dress designs in silk with overlays of chiffon or organza (starting at $550). They can keep it simple, or can select from an array of specially created couture embellishments and accessories (like lace, flowers, ruffles, beading and gathered chiffon). Wilson-Marquis also offers a “dress makeover” service, for brides who choose to revamp their mother’s gown.

Janet Nelson Kumar

Janet Nelson Kumar’s line of romantic dresses includes a scoop-neck, two-tiered duchesse-silk ball gown and a girlish georgette dress with charmeuse ruffles. Incorporating French lace, sweetheart necklines, and trumpet skirts, Kumar designs the dresses in her studio near Fort Tryon Park. Prices start at $2,000.

J.Crew

J.Crew’s gown collection is great for unpretentious, low-key affairs or beach weddings (from $225). The designs come in materials like satin and silk tricotine with a half-inch seam allowance (which can be let out slightly), and brides can order extra yardage at no charge. Alterations not included.

Junko Yoshioka

Junko Yoshioka’s streamlined gowns are designed, made, and sold in this Soho atelier. Whether brides choose a gown from the couture-quality collection or have it custom designed, their big-day dress will be made specially to their measurements. Customer service is a priority; the boutique takes only one appointment at a time. Dresses from the collection start at $3,500. Custom gown prices upon request.

Jussara Lee

Brides-to-be come to Lee for her ability to construct garments that fit just right. Her discreet designs, like plain silk halter-neck gowns and chic organza strapless dresses (from $3,000), abound; she has also made custom-designed matching white tuxedos for a couple. By appointment only.

Kathryn Conover Bridal

Kathryn Conover spent a decade designing high-end evening gowns, and now she’s moved on to bridal ware with a talented network of seamsters, pattern-cutters, and beaders who create virtually anything a bride can dream up—ditto for bridesmaids (from $1,800). Off-the-rack alteration fees are $30 per hour.

Kleinfeld

This plush salon has over a thousand different styles ranging from modern to bohemian to vintage-inspired—perfect for a bride who needs endless options. Designers include big names like Melissa Sweet and Monique Lhuillier, plus more affordable wares. .

Lara Hélène Bridal Atelier

This couture shop is known for hand-stitched garments and great variety: sleek sheaths, sexy beaded trumpet dresses, and lavishly embroidered ball gowns with fifteen-foot trains (from $2,500). Appointments are completely private, so brides have the dressing area and garden in the back all to themselves.

LeBus Vêture

Brides seeking a Continental edge flock to LeBus Vêture, a bridal salon that makes only custom gowns. Designer Emily Darj meets with clients to determine a silhouette, and uses their ideas to fashion the look. She loves using lace, embroidery, and beading. Alterations not included. By appointment only. Prices start at $3,000.

Lela Rose

Lela Rose’s gowns are known for their modern shapes and slender silhouettes in muslin and laundered duchesse satin. This season, floral motifs abound. Fine embroidery and attention to detail make these gowns very fine, but not too flashy. Custom dresses are available ($3,995 to $10,000).

Marcos Carrazana

Marcos Carrazana’s original silk wedding dresses vary in style from straight sheaths to traditional ball gowns. In the small, manageable shop, each bride-to-be may customize her dress by mixing and matching elements from the in-store samples. Dresses start at $1,800.

Mark Ingram Bridal Atelier

The lovely space has an intimate atmosphere in which brides can try on some notable labels in bridal couture: Monique Lhuillier, Alberta Ferretti, Angel Sanchez, Oscar de la Renta, Karl Lagerfeld, Elizabeth Fillmore, and more (from $2,850). And don’t think he’s forgotten about the mother-of-the-bride. His brand new location called Mark Ingram Atelier2 (108 West 39th St., nr. Sixth Ave, Ste. 86903; 212-221-8223) is specifically for moms, with conservative yet stylish offerings from designers like Angel Sanchez, Monique Lhuillier, and Peter Langer. Alteration fees average ten to fifteen percent.
